A Great 3rd Quarter

But a Loss Overall

This Saturday saw Hillcrest first team take on top of the met league, Lavender Park and after a fairly close game (minus a dreadful 3rd quarter) in the first half of the season, Hillcrest were looking to improve on their score. With Coach Anna Harris at a wrestling wedding, it was up to Becky Crisfield and Vice-captain Millie Oughton to select the starting 7. Starting 7 from GK to GS: Millie Oughton, Lily Rogers, Elizabeth Callaghan, Emily Nicholls, Becky Crisfield, Emily Barber & Fiona Bateman.

The first few minutes started well despite some unfamiliar combinations, converting the first 2 centre passes with minimal passing and direct drives. Lavender Park’s calm collected composure allowed them to also convert their first few centre passes with ease, keeping the score level. Hillcrest’s steady pace took a turn as Lavender Park stepped up their defence, Hillcrest struggled with passing in the attacking half of the court resulting in 12 passing errors. Luckily Hillcrest were on their toes and not all passing errors were lost as we worked for each other to scoop up the tipped balls. Passing errors and shooting stats below 50% allowed Lavender Park to take the quarter 10-16.

No changes going into the second quarter also meant play remained the same, which allowed Lavender Park to utilise and increase their score to 19-30. Defence found it hard to break Lavender Park’s rhythm and their shooter’s hold whilst Attack struggled to get free and hit circle edge. Although passing errors improved, a few balls were lost to contact in attack. Defence and mid court worked hard to turn the ball over and 5 interceptions were made of which 2 were converted. Turnover conversion rate for this quarter was 22%, with turnovers being lost to passing and shooting. Not a great first half but still in the game.

Third quarter saw a switch between Elizabeth Callaghan and Millie Oughton for some height in circle defence. For the first few minutes this worked really well, with Elizabeth Callaghan putting a new pressure on the pass, forcing a few feeding errors allowing Hillcrest to work the ball up from the backline. However only a few minutes in and with Defence fighting for the rebound, Elizabeth Callaghan landed on Lily Rogers ankle causing time to be called and bring Millie Oughton back, Becky Crisfield to WD and Katie Mayo on to WA. A great loss after some spectacular play, but Hillcrest didn’t let it faze them and found their feet in all areas creating some fantastic play. Millie Oughton and Lily Rogers worked well with the new combination of Becky Crisfield in defence, each making a great interception and taking it safely down to goal. Emily Nicholls and Katie Mayo worked well on centre passes, reading each other’s movement well, creating space and putting some fantastic feeds into the circle. And Emily Barber and Fiona Bateman found each other’s space with Fiona Bateman creating a draw and allowing Emily Barber to run the back line for some great pops in. Team work was fantastic, each player working for each other resulting in excellent shooting stats, centre pass conversions and lowest error rate to date. Fantastic work allowed Hillcrest to take the quarter win (19-15) closing in on the final score to 38-45. A 7 goal difference we know is doable.

With spirits raised Hillcrest entered the last quarter out to win. After an unexpected quarter defeat for Lavender Park they also came out hungry for the ball and made every turnover count. With Hillcrest running out of steam, passing and reading errors snuck back in allowing Lavender Park to push on with their lead and take the final score 46-68 (quarter score 8-23).

Player of the match was shared between Emily Nicholls for her great drives and fakes in attack and Becky Crisfield for her fantastic performance at WD.
Opposition vote went to Elizabeth Callaghan
