One Step Closer
A great effort from both teams
This weekend Hillcrest A took on Barnes, a team that have proven to be tough opposition in previous games so we knew it wouldn’t be a walk in the park. With Harriet Field taking to the court after weeks off for injury and most of the team back to full health, Hillcrest were ready with their A game. Starting 7 from GS to GK: Emily Barber, Harriet Field, Becky Crisfield, Laura Cross, Lauren Brown, Lily Rogers and Millie Oughton with super subs Fiona Bateman and Anna Gray at the ready and with super stats from Katie Mayo and Joe Crisfield.
The first quarter had some moments of brilliance and some not so great moments as we worked with new combinations. Attack struggled to get free from Barnes’ tough defence and find the space for the safe ball, but when it was found some great circle edge balls were placed and some great shots were made. Defence put great pressure on the ball coming through the court but struggled with the height in Barnes attacking circle. Despite being substantially shorter, Millie Oughton made some great tips and even a few rebounds allowing Hillcrest to take the quarter win 13-10.
The second quarter stayed the same, and attack still struggled to make it to circle edge with the ease found against some of the other teams. Great arms and interceptions from Barnes, coupled with our static movement meant Barnes turned over a few of our centre passes, keeping the game close. With 4 minutes to go an unlucky collision took Laura Cross off for a blood injury bringing Fiona Bateman on to GS, Emily Barber out to WA and Becky Crisfield out to centre. With a completely new combination in attack, Hillcrest struggled to find their feet and Barnes closed in the gap bringing the score to within 1, but with great arms from Lauren Brown and a few great turnovers in defence, Hillcrest managed to gain them back taking the second quarter 11-10 and half time score 24-20 half time score.
The third quarter saw Laura Cross come back on at C after some help from the Bs with plasters and strapping and a snide comment from Steven Cross about needing to be in bubble wrap, Hillcrest and Barnes took to the court for the second half. Within a few minutes, Laura Cross proved Steven right, colliding with the GS resulting in a bruised cheek. With Laura aiming for the accident prone trophy, Lily Rogers snuck in to steal it after rolling her ankle and admitting it wasn’t strapped because she ran out of tape (#facepalm). With Lily Rogers taken off court, Fiona Bateman moved to GK, and Anna Gray on to GS to play the final few minutes. With some height in defence, Fi forced a few feeding errors from Barnes solid attack allowing us to turn the ball over. With some great defence from Hillcrest, 100% of centre passes making it to goal and a fantastic last second pass from Emily Barber into Harriet Field allowed Hillcrest to take the quarter 13-6 and overall score 37-26. A great third quarter score when we can often see a dip in performance.
With attack working off each other better and pressure in defence stepped up, the last quarter stayed the same. Some fantastic movement from Emily Baber at WA saw the ball flow through attack easier with the 3 shooters working their triangles. With Hillcrest losing their steam, Barnes stepped up a gear (despite only having 7 players), and forced bad passing and read the ball well to intercept and score taking the last quarter win 9-10. Some excellent play by both teams, but Hillcrest got the all-important win (46-36) taking us one step closer to play offs.
