A Good High Scoring Game
12 Down, 2 To Go
With beautiful weather beaming down on the court, Hillcrest A team were ready to take on Pleiades for hopefully another good win. A quick few games of killer with Katie Mayo winning her first game with some excellent shooting (even taking out Coach Anna Harris, despite the joking threat of being benched), the first team were pumped and ready. Starting 7 from GK to GS: Millie Oughton, Lily Rogers, Laura Cross, Emily Nicholls, Becky Crisfield, Anna Gray & Emily Barber.
The first 15 minutes saw some great play throughout the team. A steady pace allowed great drives and feeds in attack with minimal passing errors and great interceptions and tips in defence, despite some great feeds into Pleiades tall shooter. Steady and calm composure allowed Hillcrest to take the first quarter with a great score or 23-6.
Second quarter saw some fantastic movement from Emily Barber and Anna Gray, switching and drawing out defenders for some great feeds in from Emily Nicholls and Becky Crisfield, however errors started to creep in and balls were lost and turned over. Some quick drives down the court from Pleiades’ nippy WA saw the ball flow through the court with ease and into their tall GS. A low turnover conversion rate (25%), coupled with lower shooting stats (55%) than the previous quarter meant Pleiades took the quarter win 11-14 (half time score 34-20).
A mix up at half time bought Lauren Brown on at WD for some all-important height in defence and long arms to force the long ball in for Millie Oughton and Lily Rogers to intercept. A change in attack saw Katie Mayo on at WA to create new drives and feeds into the circle. Again there was some good and bad play, but overall a good quarter considering the second. A low conversion rate of 33% but better shooting saw Hillcrest take the quarter 18-8 and push on with the overall lead 52-28.
With a comfortable lead, Hillcrest made changes for the final quarter bringing Emily Barber out to GA, Fiona Bateman into GS, and Laura Cross on at C. A new combination in attack and Fiona’s height in the circle was tempting to force long balls in but despite this temptation only a few of these were made (with the majority making their destination). The majority of the final 15 minutes was calm and collected with short and hard passes waiting for the drive to top of the circle. A total of 16 turnovers (converting 8) and fantastic final quarter shooting (82%) saw Hillcrest push on with their lead to 71-32.
A few areas still to work on before our tough final games of the season in particular conversion rates, but a good result after a few disappointing losses.
