Within Touching Distance
Unfortunately not the outcome we hoped for
With the snow settling on the Hillcrest courts, Lily Rogers, Becky Crisfield & Laura Cross arrived at the club early with brooms and hair dryers at the ready, but were disappointed when a large patch of ice was discovered making the courts unplayable. With Harriet Field's quick thinking she booked Caterham School's indoor court so the match we'd been looking forward to could begin.
The starting line up from GK to GS was, Millie Oughton, Lily Rogers, Laura Cross, Emily Nicholls, Becky Crisfield, Harriet Field and Emily Barber. The target was to go out calm and steady and we stepped on that lovely indoor court and forgot what the target was and forgot some basic skills such as catching. With more errors than we should have made Omega took the first quarter with a 6 goal lead. Not what we had hoped, but we knew it wasn't over yet.
With a quick few stern words from Anna Harris at quarter time Hillcrest picked up their game going into the second quarter. With some great defending and shooting boots on, Hillcrest won the quarter by two and closed in on the gap.
No changes going into the third quarter, but changes for Omega meant Hillcrest had to keep steady as we adapted to their changes. And adapted we did, we capitalised on their errors, made some great interceptions, put some fantastic shots up too, although a few errors slipped in as well but overall our great play allowed us to take the quarter win and overall score by 2 goals. A great quarter, we just needed another 15 minutes again.
Going into the last quarter with the win within touching distance we knew we needed to keep calm and steady. The first few minutes we did just that but then the pressure got the better of us and unforced errors were made. With great defence from both teams a low quarter score of 2-6 meant Omega took the win by 3 goals. Not the outcome we hoped for but the silver lining is we were within 5 so get that all important 2 points keeping us still top of the league. Everything is still to play for girls, we have this.
Player's player and coach's player went to Harriet Field for her fantastic shooting boots
Opposition vote went to Emily Nicholls for her consistently good drives and passing.
