Regional Team

Capt: Kim Berridge

2007/2008 End of Season Report

This is only the second year in the Regional League and we are still on a learning curve.  Selection was in two stages and we still struggled to field a team each match.  We therefore used additional players such as Sophie and Emily who played a vital part.  We won two matches.  Unfortunately, we still came bottom and are now in Regional Division 2.  Our success is and was due to Natalie Swift’s coaching (assisted by Clare Nicholls).  Natalia has now been appointed coach of Brunel Hurricanes.  Thank you to all players.  It is appreciated that most matches are a long way away and well done everyone.

Poly Team

Capt: Lesley Hogan

2007/2008 End of Season Report

The Poly League used to be an elite league for invited clubs and used to be 3 divisions and all the top clubs in the south of England wanted to be in Poly League, it was the equivalent of playing at county level.  Unfortunately, with the new EN structure, the Poly League is not recognised as a feeder into Regional so playing in Poly doesn’t lead anywhere.  Purley left Poly to go into the County League.

This year Poly has shrunk to 2 divisions and still gives the opportunity of a good standard of game.  Unfortunately, 3 teams in our division couldn’t play on a Saturday so matches were on a Sunday and the gaps between the matches were too long which didn’t really benefit the club.  We only won two matches this year and there is discussion on whether we pull out of Poly as we, and a number of other clubs, want at least 8 teams in a division.  We will attend the Poly AGM (on 30th June) and may make the decision to move to the Surrey League.

It was a very enjoyable season, everyone played well.  We lost Lacey through work commitments, Anna and had a number of injuries.  Grateful to everyone who filled in

We were awarded points by Oxshott and gave points to Whitton.  An interesting season for the B team.  We finished equal 5th in the division on 39 points with 3rd and 4th having 47 and 46 points respectively.

Some matches stick in my mind, one was against Oxshott who put a zone on which we played through really well; another one was against Freds when Louise hurt her knee and determinedly carried on; we were some 12 goals down but never gave up and eventually lost by 6 though I think without the injury it would have been a different result – a very determined effort by all; and our last game of the season when Jo at GD was unanimous player of the match and the umpire said that it was an absolute pleasure to umpire our GK as she was such a happy, sporting player (yes, Debs has mellowed!).

Thank you to the core players ; Lily, Zoe, Mille, Clare N, Alex, Louise and Holly, and Katy and Jo (when they joined us later in the year) and to the sub players whose assistance was greatly appreciated – Nicki, Claire O, Heather B, Jenny F, Erica, Debbie W.   Alex, Clare N, Millie and Jo were also named as player of the match by the opposition – well done.

I would also like to thank Barbara Gorrell and Nicki Constant for umpiring for us so regularly.  I am the ‘oldie’ in the team but that doesn’t faze me; I get great pleasure as GK watching the youngsters (and Clare) run their legs off in front of me down the court. The player of the match votes are very close this year so I invite all the B team to come to the dinner dance to find out who eventually won.

Surrey A Team

Capt: Cassie McCarthy

2007/2008 End of Season Report

I shall start with a positive - well done and congratulations to the Surrey A team for working hard this season, being determined and working as a team.   lthough we have finished 7th out of 8, the team worked hard in all matches and did not give up in most matches. We won three matches and lost 11.  However with regard to the matches that we lost, in 6 out of the 11 matches, we were within 10 goals.  A lot of the matches were, therefore, very close. The team fought hard in most matches and stayed focus and determined throughout the matches.  It was not our fitness that let us down, it was sometime silly mistakes like bad passing, which let us down.  The main squad was Sophie, Alex, Gina, Catherine,  Emily,  Janet, Annette, Cassie, Isla (first half of season).

We also had lots of guest appearances from Poly, Surrey B and some of the subsidiary members – thank you to all of you for stepping in when needed.  Unfortunately we will probably be going down, but hopefully that will mean a lot more wins next season which will in turn increase our motivation and drive.  We will come back fighting next season with the aim of being promoted!!

Development Squad Report

New Club Capt: Cassie McCarthy

2007/2008 End of Season Report

This is the first season that we have entered this Under 16 league as it is a new league. The matches take place on Surrey game weeks at Nonsuch. It is an under 16 league, which has been a great way of easing and introducing those who have come up into the seniors from juniors, into senior netball.

The competition has been tough and games have been hard, but the team remained strong, focussed and determined throughout, despite sometimes a big goal difference. However, on each game the players still tried hard in every quarter, playing their hearts out – so well done to all the girls.   In some matches, some under 14 and under 13s stepped in once again to fill the gaps. They blended in perfectly into the team and played extremely well. We finished second from bottom, however, it should be noted that some of our girls are only 13 – 14 and they were playing against a full team of 15 year olds. The team did very well overall. Sam Edwards captained the team the first half of the season and I would like to personally thank Sam on behalf of the club for all her and also her families hard work and efforts in organising the team.

The main squad was: Rebecca Haig Robyn Vaani Sam (first half) Rachel (first half) Katie Lauren Liz Rebecca Haig Charlie

Well done girls, you all worked really hard and played so well.

Croydon C Team

Capt: Natasha Brayton

2007/2008 End of Season Report

The whole team played well.  Not sure where we finished in the division as the Croydon League website has not been updated.  We had several injuries during the season.  We always gave 100% – one match we were losing and came back to draw.   Unfortunately, Marie is not coming back next year.  Jenni Williams (Club Captain) congratulated Natasha in her captaincy and championing the C team, without the support of the seniors, and thanked her for a job well done.

Met League Report

New Club Capt: Cassie McCarthy

2007/2008 End of Season Report

The Met games, in terms of getting a team out, have not been too bad!!!  We only had to cancel one Met B match due to not being able to get enough players - but apart from that we have muddled through!!

For all the other matches we managed to get a team out each game which was great!   I do not think that any week the team has been the same, which has been tough but at the same time a great experience for all players, to include in particular some of the younger players who have had to play with layers of various ages and of various standards.

This season we have also had the under 14s and some under 13s fill in when we have been short.  This has been an amazing experience and opportunity for them and it gave them a taster for what it is like to play a senior match level, which is good preparation for their move into the seniors next season.  They all certainly rose to the challenge and thank you to them for filling in and playing so well!

In both Met A and Met B we finished 6th out of 8 so we should not go down next season.  Thank you to all those who played Met games and also to those who umpired them.  Lets hope next season we will not have to cancel any matches.
